Waiting for the Shop to Ship

Wed Jul 7, 2010, 2:29 PM
I've felt so very handicapped without Photoshop on my computer.  I got the new Lightroom 3 and am enjoying it, but I can't complete editing my photos without Photoshop.  My PC died about 2 months ago, and I only had Photoshop for Windowst.  So I'm waiting for the university book store to get it back in stock so I can get it for my Mac with my student discount.  Until then, I'll just keep writing and experimenting with my new lens....

Enjoy the features.

Got Meself a New Lens

Finally got myself a new lens.  I haven't gotten one since I got my camera.  I purchased the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II.  I wanted something good for portraits.  This thing rocks when it comes to DoF and bokeh!

It's Been A While

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 29, 2010, 5:20 PM
Facebook l Gallery l dA Portfolio l Watch Me l Note Me

I've been popping in and out lately, but not much more than that.  Still trying to catch up on all the deviations in my inbox (currently over 4000).  At the moment I'm sitting here reading about the history of photography, finally getting educated on how my favorite visual art began.  I'm taking a history of photography class for summer session.  A moment ago I was sipping at my empty coffee cup half aware, as if by magic a few more drops might materialize out of the ether and fall onto my tongue.  But that's not gonna happen.

I know I've been out of the loop.  i've been uploading photos now and then, but haven't been interacting like I once did.  I suppose my heart hasn't been in it lately.  That, and I haven't exactly had the time.  But now that summer is here I'm sighing a nice dose of relief, reveling in the fact that I can finally get back to my favorite hobby, photography.  I plan on getting out to take nature shots some time this week.  Several photoshoot opportunities with friends are also opening up, so I will be getting more into portraiture, which I've always wanted to do.  Ever since I started photography I've dreamed of doing engagement and wedding photos and pictures of bands along with nature and architectural shots.  I don't want to be stuck in one category of the medium.  I want to enjoy the happiness of shooting people, of shooting life, and of depicting it in a beautiful way.  But I also want to enjoy the freedom and solitude of nature, where I can feel God in the wind around me and in the soil beneath my feet.

I'm also currently working on my senior project for college, about a year before it's due.  A 300-or-so page book about the end of the world, featuring a sarcastic and apathetic narrator and a plethora of characters with a diversity of philosophies about how to approach life when the end is nigh.  Of course, there's a lot more to it than that.  But there's the basic premise for you, as generic as it sounds.  It's really not very generic at all.

Hope all is going well,
B.S. Smith

Success

Well, two days ago I received the conformation email notice that my application went through good and fair and I've been entered into the photography minor at my university!  This coming fall I will officially begin taking photography classes.  It's something of a thrill, to put it lightly.  The best part is that it shouldn't hinder my ability to graduate on time; I have enough remaining elective units to use them for the minor.  Yeah yeah yeah.  Livin' the dream, one step at a time.

Stay classy,

Brandon

Another PC Failure Story

Journal Entry: Tue May 11, 2010, 12:01 PM

My desktop computer is 3.5 years old.  I think it's sad that computers only last about that long these days.  I went to turn it on last week to print out a reading assignment when I discovered the Blue Screen of Death.  It was trying to find files.  Apparently the thing had crashed.  I finally took it in to Staples yesterday with my fingers crossed that they could retrieve my files.  Ironically, not only was I planning on printing an assignment when I turned my computer on, but I also planned on backing up my documents and photos to my external hard drive.  Hopefully those files still lurk somewhere on the disk, because I will be very sad if I've just lost a couple month's worth of photographs and projects saved as photoshop files.

It looks like I might have to resort to purchasing CS5 when it comes out in a week or two for my Mac.  Bummer that.  Actually it's kind of exciting, but I don't want to have to fork out additional money right now.  Sigh.  Life goes on.

The Spring Collection Is Here!

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 30, 2010, 1:22 AM

Haha, Ok so that title is a play with department store lingo.  But I work at a department store, so I tend to hear that a lot, or at least see it in writing.  Anyways, some new stuff:

Just changed my deviant ID and avatar to something a little more sunny and cheerful.  It's spring time, after all.  Time to exit winter mode.

I just created a website with Weebly, and have started blogging a poem per day on there.  It's a way of stretching my creative muscles and getting something written every day.  Summer will be here soon and when it rolls around I will be investing much of my time into writing a novel for my college senior project.  So I'm trying to get myself prepped a little bit.  Here's the link to my Weebly site:  [link]

Boy it's been hard getting things uploaded.  But this has been a busy academic year for me, and I deem that next year will be the same.  I try my best though :D

I've seen some beautiful art and photos being uploaded to the site lately, keep up the good work everybody!

Now for a piece of art that left me speechless.  It's emotionally captivating, and just intense as far as technical detail goes:

A Day in the Life + Features

Journal Entry: Thu Apr 8, 2010, 12:27 AM
Facebook l Gallery l dA Portfolio l Watch Me l Note Me

Hey everyone!

It's just another day in the life and time for a little self-promotional venture, since it's been difficult getting attention since I've begun uploading work again.  After having been away for so long, it's surprising how few people seem to take a peek at their inbox anymore.

My latest poem is perhaps my favorite I've done to date.  I spent several days writing it and refining it; I took more time with it than any other work of poetry I have uploaded here.  I've shot for more depth of meaning than ever before, and chose language that encourages deeper thought and attention.  Of course, there will always be readers who simply gloss over one's work, but that can't be avoided; but for those who actually find interest in poetry, this is an honest attempt at bettering myself in the craft.  So here's a link to it, since we have to fight to draw attention to the things we love:

kaleidoscopeif God exists not      then neither do i.
pray tell -  you who contest -
articulate how an absence of time     sound     material
can arise from the Nothing     a phoenix without first life
can conceive one atom of another
- a grand kaleidoscope of color -
birth stars     author worlds
make mobile these things in the benevolent void between?
tell me
pray tell     why should i listen to your theories

In addition, I've uploaded several images from my Washington D.C. trip which have received surprisingly little attention.  Perhaps they don't deserve as much merit as my older works, but I don't necessarily feel that's true.

Hope everyone's doing well in this fine spring weather, if it's indeed fine spring weather you're experiencing :)

Back from vacation and back to school

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 29, 2010, 4:19 PM

Washington, D.C.

One week just isn't enough vacation time.  Even so, I had a wonderful break.

My family and I went to Washington, D.C. last Monday-Saturday.  I'd never been to the U.S. capitol before, so it was an awesome experience.  The weather was chilly at times, but many of the cherry blossoms were in bloom so fighting through the cold and braving through legs almost too sore to walk on was well worth it.  I got some wonderful shots on my trip which I can't wait to share.

Now that I'm back, I've ignored my deviation inbox for far too long.  There are 6,529 deviations waiting to be looked at, but it simply isn't going to happen.  For the first time ever I must press the delete button on all of them.  I apologize.  If there is a particular work or works you want me to look at, just send me a note.  Otherwise I'll be taking a peek at my favorite artists' pages to see if they've done anything new or noteworthy.  Again, I'm sorry, that's all I have time for :(

It's good to be back.  I'm not particularly pleased with the new changes DA has made to its layout, but what can we do?  As if the people in charge would ever listen.  They want it their way and likely won't want to change anything.  I would probably want it my way, too.  That's just the way the world works.

Cheers,

Brandon

Hello again!

Well, the term has finally ended but the new one will begin in little more than a week.  I feel good about my finals, so I'm quite content at the moment.

I still won't be uploading anything during the coming week I think.  I'll be on vacation and, as to not give away my position or anything, you'll find out where I'll be going to all in good time.  I'm sure many wonderful new pictures will be coming out of my trip.  I'm quite excited.  I haven't taken pictures since early February.

My subscription ended, I have come to realize.  I'll probably renew it soon after my trip.

I'm not too pleased with the changes DA has made in the short time I've been away.  I think its distracting from the art.  Isn't this an art website?  Why all these new features, like stacks and everything?  It's making my blood boil.

Anyway, have a good one, and stay classy.  I'll be back.
